I walked down the steps at Vauxhall
bridge I took a walk along the dirty Thames
and the temple of the spies stood in the sky
and the light of the day was dying on the cranes
and 18 million people in cool rotation turned
tied one to another in ways they didn’t know

when I was lost and I felt afraid
I bent and kissed the virgin Mary’s feet
At a tiny shrine on a dark and cobbled street
